The Chinese Type 83 multiple launch rocket system was developed in the early 1980's. It presumably entered service with Chinese army in 1983. The Type 83 MLRS was also known as the WM-40 in its export name. It is China's first large caliber and long-range multiple launch rocket system, however it saw only limited service. Production of the Type 83 ceased in 1988. The Type 83 has four launching tubes arranged in a single line. In flight, rockets are stabilized by tail fins and high-speed spinning. A standard rocket is 4.75 meters long and weights 484 kilograms. The launcher vehicle fires rockets with HE-FRAG, cluster and chemical warheads. The Type 83 can fire single rockets at a time or a full salvo of all four of them simultaneously. The maximum firing range is 40 kilometers.
