The Object 279 in the 20 alpha test

History[]

Object 279 (Объект 279) was a Soviet experimental heavy tank developed at the end of 1959. This special purpose tank was intended to fight on cross country terrain, inaccessible to conventional tanks, acting as a heavy breakthrough tank, and if necessary withstanding even the shockwave of a nuclear explosion. It was planned as a tank of the Supreme Command Reserve. One of the reasons that this tank project was abandoned, as with other heavy tank projects, was the fact that the Soviet military stopped operating with heavy fighting vehicles of that type, tanks and similar, as of 1960. Since then, the heaviest ones are kept at about 50 metric tons of weight, that is without counting in any extra equipment such as additional reactive armor, mine clearing devices (mine ploughs, mine rollers) etc.

In Game[]

The Object 279 is one of the premium tanks available for the premium line. On the surface the Object 279 has extremely high armor stats even more superb than the Maus but in battle players will find themselves easily killed with a few shots. The Object 279 in fact has the worst health points of all Warsaw heavy tanks having only 117 making it possible for tanks even with AP and especially APDS to quickly put the 279 out of action. The gun the vehicle sports is not all that great either having only a max damage of 94 while being limited to only AP and HE ammunition having minimal accuracy a common weakness of Soviet tanks and having a relatively slow reload time. Due to these inherent weaknesses the Object 279 is forced to play a close quarters support role. What the Object 279 excels on is its inclusion of spaced armor which makes it nearly impervious to HEAT spam which is common in low level matches often protecting it from six or more shots from vehicles such as the Ontos something most other tanks can't boast about. The Object 279 despite being a heavy tank has a respectable speed but its tracks aren't covered, making them easy to disable. For a premium vehicle it is not worth the price tag and is mainly a gimmick vehicle designed solely to counter the M50 Ontos.

Pros and Cons[]

Pros:[]

  • Amazing spaced armor, with having two tiers of it at under level 20
  • Turret rotation is respectable for a heavy as well

Cons:[]

  • Expensive
  • Very low health pool for a heavy tank
  • Low alpha damage with a fairly slow reload as well, poor DPM
  • Limited ammo types
